Big Style for Big Girls

In the world of fashion, the larger clothing sizes are often ignored in favor of the smaller sizes. Fashion designers often state that this is because their clothes hang much better on smaller sized models. More and more retailers today are realizing that there is a great demand for plus size clothing however. The simple truth is that your average woman is a lot cuddlier than a supermodel – she has curves and is a little podgy. Even the role players in the fashion industry itself have been forced to admit that their models are not typical of the everyday woman.

This has led to a collective sigh of relief from many “average” women. Those of us that are larger in size have more choice now in plus size clothing than ever before. As plus size clothing becomes more mainstream, there is more social acceptance of it and clothing designers are acknowledging that large women can wear trendy styles and fashion. Gone are the days of having to wear tents masquerading as dresses, today’s plus size clothing is a lot  more in tune with the fashion trends of the day.

In fact, it is now widely accepted that plus size clothing should not drown the wearer if it is to flatter them. Hiding your figure faults nowadays means that one should flaunt those areas that are great rather than engage in complete cover-ups. If, for example, you have great legs, you need to show those off. Accentuating the better bits automatically draws attention away from the bad bits.

Plus size clothing has, in fact, undergone a complete transformation. This is largely because a number of larger people started their own clothing lines as there were no way to find clothes that truly fitted and flattered at the same time. Demand for these ranges was such that savvy marketers quickly picked up on the need to provide these lines on a larger scale and thus a very profitable industry evolved – plus size fashion.

Being overweight no longer means looking frumpy and dowdy. You can now be as brightly feathered as your skinny friends and can also take advantage of the trends. Fashion trends for those that are overweight have started seeing an emphasis on more structured garments that provide a good deal of support and higher quality fabrics that drape better.

Fashionistas emphasize the importance of creating the illusion of shape rather than creating a boxy silhouette. Where we may think that oversized, baggy clothes hide the problem, they actually accentuate it and we are thus making it a lot worse. It is far better to wear clothes that have some shape and structure to them in order to create a better outline.
